Where Were We?

The Lucksmiths Where Were We? Lyrics
1.The Cassingle Revival

Another summer slipped away without me noticing
At least you had the decency to say I'll see you later
The streets are wider here
I watched you disappear
Such a simple thing became so complicated

And I watched my shadow shorten
Ankle-deep in autumn

Remember when I said you were too young
To start a story with Remember when?
Well that was then, and this is appalling
But in the dappled sunshine
Underneath the clothesline
I spent this afternoon nostalgic for this morning

From certain angles
The skyline untangles

And your loyalties are divided
Between digital and vinyl
But I'm biding time
Until the cassingle revival
Because you promised when it happens
You'll return

2.Myopic Friends

When we look back on it
We can't deny our love affair was so short-sighted:
You go this way, I'll go that,
Our paths will cross again someday
It's funny how things always work that way for us
I'm on a bus
I couldn't stand another day
I left in a rush I couldn't stay
I always run, sometimes hide
Should I stay or go? I can't decide
Should I say your go
And throw your way the dice?

When we look back on it
Our little love affair
Come a little closer dear
When we look back on it
Come closer, I need to see you over here
By the fire

When we look back on it
Our affaire de coeur was something no-one wanted
But if you're cooking for me
I can't ignore we've got something in common:
I love to eat, you love to cook
And you work wonders with the wok
And though I'm lying on the floor
There's room for more, you can be sure
This grateful guest has become a painful pest
This grateful guest has become a painful pest

3.A Downside To The Upstairs

It was a fine idea in autumn
On the palest afternoons
Parallelograms of sunshine fell across the room

I woke up and it was winter
With the rain across the roofs
And the weather turned me into a bit of a recluse
If I needed an excuse

That mistake was mine to make, I know
Even so
Seasons come and seasons go

I threw open both the windows
With the coming of the spring
There were weeks I didn't want for anything

I guess I should have seen it coming
But summer caught me unawares
I found out there was a downside to the upstairs

That mistake was mine to make, I know
Even so
Seasons come and seasons go

Oh! the humidity
Oh! the stupidity

4.Can't Believe My Eyes

You always want to be somewhere
Looks like we're already there
Take a look outside
I can't believe my eyes
Sunset became the sunrise

I can feel your heart beating
Anxious, you offer up
We really must get leaving
So conscious of the clock
I nose up to the window
Staring at the sky
Is there anything up there tonight?
Stars and satellites collide

You always want to be somewhere
Looks like we're already there
Take a look outside
Take a look outside
I can't believe my eyes
I can't believe my eyes
I can't believe my eyes

5.I Prefer The Twentieth Century

I'm not typically one to rush to judgement
But I'm having difficulty dealing with adjustment
I suppose that I'll get used to it eventually
But so far I prefer the twentieth century

Even when the evenings aren't so shitty
I can't see any stars because I'm too close to the city
True, I'm looking forward to the advent of space tourism
But for now I'm merely bored
And as a matter of fact, who isn't?

I know the picture that I paint is none too pretty
Self-portrait, up to elbows in self-pity

6.T-Shirt Weather

Hey Mike, you busy?
All this sunshine's making me dizzy
Went outside, all my clothes dried
And if I'm babbling, please forgive me
But it's the first hint of sunshine
For a week or so, I'd say
And I'm keeping well, I'm in good health
But I sneeze when I look into the sun today

There's my bike looking dusty
The spokes are broken and rusty
But I'm happy to walk
I'm happy with anything today
'Cause I'm out in the sunshine
While my friend's at home asleep
I guess that's just the downside
To the money he makes and the hours he keeps

And I say hey, it's a beautiful day
And I'm starting to feel a lot better
So wake up, wake up
It's T-shirt weather

Ba-ba-ba how could things be better?
This afternoon in the pub I met her
Maggie May on the juke-box
Hey, things are okay
Just two things she tells me,
If you want to keep things friendly
no beer for me, no peanuts, and I'll be happy
oh, and no football, well I guess that makes three

It's a beautiful day
And I'm starting to feel a lot better
So wake up, wake up
It's T-shirt weather
It's T-shirt weather

7.Tmrw Vs. Y'day

When it's hot the whole town goes to the swimming pool
When it's not the whole town stays inside
Walk past the war memorial
Towards the water slide

And on your left
Is all that's left of the bowling green
A town without a football team

Once I thought I'd never leave here
Twice I swore I'd never return
Under-fifteens, undefeated
But the lessons learned
And the bridges burned

These things hurt
But these things happen anyway
Tomorrow versus yesterday

An afternoon in the country
Is all that I was after
If I can't see you in the future
I'll see you in the pasture

8.Southernmost

Weekends away:
These were the happiest days
Ill with the thrill of the chase
They'd take a train
Take off Friday for the coast
In summer they'd go southernmost
Where the sky was swimming-pool blue
And the swimming pool was too

And every single weekend
They'd dive in at the deep end
And come Monday morning
His skin still smelled like chlorine

Remember when forever seemed just fine?
Seen through glasses of rose coloured wine
They'd sit up all night talking
Now she's sound asleep to the sound of his walkman

And every single weekend
The divide between them deepens
A curse across the kitchen
He might still be within spitting distance
But there's only one way to find out...

Take heart
Take a train to the coast
Take heart
Take a train southernmost
Take heart

9.Even Stevens

I won't lie
I don't like you whispering that way
It's your turn
It's your turn of phrase that gives you away
The games we play

One to you in the afternoon
And one to me in the evening
Seven years of Scrabble
And we're even stevens

Come on
Your complaining is getting on my nerves
At least, at last
You're completely lost for words
Did you forget what you deserve?

One to you in the afternoon
And one to me in the evening
Seven years of Scrabble
And we're even stevens

I know it's a consequence
Of clinging to consonants
But P R L N Q F C
Spells trouble to me

Come on

10.The Great Dividing Range (Demo)

There's a blanket on a mattress on my sister's floor
There's a bookmark in the atlas that I left you
I know we've been as far apart as this before
But take a look at what we've got to get through

Turn the page if those mountains make you miserable
The Great Dividing Range merely proves we're indivisible

Sincerely, was it really only yesterday
I woke you up to say goodbye?
There was something else I meant to say
But it can wait until July

I find it strange that these mountains make me miserable
When the Great Dividing Range merely proves we're indivisible

11.Friendless Summer

Today of all days you decided
That you'd drop in uninvited
You were ever so excited
You were never so in love

And this time it's requited
If I looked less than delighted
I was trying hard to hide it
But not trying hard enough

That's fantastic that's sarcastic
But forgive me the theatrics
I've been catching up on classics
And the springtime's been and gone

And I didn't see the dangers
Of hoping nothing ever changes
Till we said goodbye like strangers
For the first time in so long
So long

There's only me to blame
But I'm lonely all the same

Today of all days you decided
That you'd drop in uninvited
You were ever so excited
You were never so in love
So in love

There's only me to blame
But I'm lonely all the same

12.Goodness Gracious

What a beautiful day for a crushing defeat
What a stupid waste of sunshine
A funeral pace down a favourite street
But I have to come home sometime, I suppose

Don't be hopeful on my behalf
I'd like to offer my resignation
And strangle myself with a football scarf
Or act in self-defenestration

Yeah, I have seen better days
The weekend was mine to waste
I had nothing to do
And you had nothing to do with me

And I try, and I try, and I try your patience
How low must your expectations be?
Goodness gracious me
Goodness gracious me

13.Welcome Home

Her letter said in three weeks
She'll be coming down from Sydney
And if it wasn't asking too much
Could she spend a few days with me
But it's miserable this time of year
Don't visit, you'll regret it
But if you must insist on coming
Then I guess I'll have to wear it

We can sit around all afternoon
Inside this tiny café
Surround ourselves with people who
Are lonely too, but nowadays
This lifestyle's wearing thin
And I can't foresee a change
Is this hopelessness a consequence
Of living in this place?

Do you remember when we were happy?
I want to smile again
Do you remember when we were happy?
I want to smile again
Smile in Melbourne again

Welcome home
You've been gone far too long
Welcome home
You've been gone far too long
Welcome home

14.Mars

Hi there dear,
I'm on Mars again
Keeping in touch with all my friends
I found a nice place
Why don't you come and visit?
It's not as red as you'd think
From looking at the pictures
And it's my home again
It's my home again

I stumbled across a gorgeous valley, love
Greener than even Ferntree Gully, love
I set up camp for a week
And witnessed every romantic vision from my dreams
And it's my home again
It's my home again

Human touch is beautiful indeed
But in my mind I've made up
With all the people that I'd see everyday
We'd avoid each other like the plague
But they're my best friends now
And when I think of them, that's how they'll stay
In this brave new world
I think about them everyday
In this brave new world
I think about you everyday
